7 Most Annoying and Terrifying Ways to Wake Up
But perhaps we should start talking about waking up from a different angle – like listing out the worst ways to wake up in the mornings? Afterall, it’s easier to relate to real-life scenarios that actually happen in our day-to-day lives, than with theoretical methods that supposedly transform our mornings for the better. Perhaps that could drive more insight into how we sleep, and things to watch out for with the goal of getting a good night’s sleep?
Who’s with us? Well, let’s get into it! Here are 7 worst ways to be woken up in the mornings:
1. Construction in your neighbour’s place
Been there, done that. Or should we say heard that? This is probably one of the most common annoying sounds to wake up to, especially if you’re based in big cities where everyone lives in close proximity. Loud, strong or sharp sounds are the worst sounds for a sleeping brain. They can deeply startle you in your sleeping state, especially if you’re deep in your sleep cycle. We are much more sensitive to stressful stimulants when we are asleep, and waking up from construction noises like drilling and hammering can really create the stress you don’t need in the mornings!
2. Mosquitoes buzzing in your ear
If mosquitoes have always been especially attracted to you, this will surely resonate. Waking up to this flying creature sneaking up on you can be really annoying, especially when you’re just waking up and still booting up your brain for the day ahead. You know the sneaky pest is next to you (or even on you), but you don’t know exactly where. It’s as though the mozzie’s posing a challenge to you and saying “catch me if you can”.
3. A video call from your boss
Not just an audio call. A VIDEO CALL. In this age of remote working, communication lines are way more direct thanks to the use of coworking apps like Teams or Slack. So when you oversleep by any unfortunate circumstance, you won’t just be frantic about getting ready and leaving home as quickly as you can. Instead, you’ll be expected to answer calls from your eager coworkers or irritated superiors immediately, leaving you with even less time to get your sh*t together for the day ahead. How’s that for the most stressful work day ever?
4. That *obnoxious* alarm on the iPhone
Everybody knows that sound. And everybody hates it. It sounds like a nuke going off, and no one can escape it unless they’ve consciously put in the effort to reconfigure their alarm ringtone. While it does the job of jolting you out of bed, it’s also the perfect way to ensure that you’ll wake up feeling like the most pissed off version of yourself. So do yourself a favour, go into your alarm settings, and pick something easier on the ears (and on yourself) for an alarm. You could even set a different song for the weekdays and the weekends. You’ll wake up at peace, and in bliss.
5. Or worse, a fire alarm
That should raise an alarm, right? You’ll wake up to a sharp shrill that never seems to end. After five minutes of dazing and waiting for that annoying sound to go away, you’ll realise it’s neither a drill nor a dream, and you have to get the hell out of a burning building. Should you get dressed? Or should you run out barely dressed? What should you grab on your way out? Where’s everything? And everyone? Certainly way too many questions to be asking, or answering, for any morning.
6. A stranger in your room
Man or ghost? It doesn’t matter because either way, it’s hands down one of the most terrifying moments to wake up to. It could be a burglar trying to make a quick buck out of collecting all your valuables. Or a predator with harmful intentions. Or just your mother sneaking into your room to pick up something unimportant. Perhaps it’s just a sign that you should lock up every door securely before drifting off to dreamland.
7. (Serious answer) The morning after something terrible has happened
Death in the family. Loss of a job. Heart-wrenching breakups. The reality of these events can really hit you differently and painfully once you open your eyes after a momentary escape into dreamland. When these things happen, it can cause an overload of new information and overwhelming feelings that you can’t really put together or manage until you fall asleep. It can feel so much worse after the brain processes everything overnight. Unfortunately some of these situations are part and parcel of our lives, and the next best thing we can do is to rest as much as we can through the darkness and bravely take on each morning stronger with each passing day.
